Welcome to the website of the Waterside Charitable Trust – a small charity based in West Yorkshire that has big ideas on helping out in Kenya…
We believe that by keeping things small and involving ourselves in direct action and bypassing bureaucracy that we can make a real difference to people’s lives where it really matters.
For now, most of our work is concentrated in Kisumu, Kenya’s third largest city on the banks of Lake Victoria. Our efforts particularly concentrate on Obunga, a slum that has developed from the lack of affordable housing in the city.
Most buildings are made of sheet iron and wood, there is little sanitation and disease, including high incidences of HIV and AIDS, spreads quickly.
We are attempting to improve living conditions for people in Obunga – we have thus far provided a clinic, a community centre, working toilets and a shower block. We have also helped fund selected small businesses in an effort to release people from the poverty trap.
It does not take a lot of money to make a difference, it just needs that money to go direct to the source where it is needed, so less it eaten up in administration fees.
